Booking your Theory Test
Theory test centres will not allow candidates to simply turn up without an appointment, so it is important to book in advance.
Before booking your test, you must have applied for your provisional licence via the DVLA. This is crucial, as you need your driving licence number to book the test. If you do not have a provisional licence, you will need to order one from the DVLA. This can be done by collecting a form D1 from any post office. You will need passport photos of yourself, and will need to pay the appropriate fee; currently £38.
Once armed with your licence, you will be able to apply for a theory test. This can be done in one of three ways:
- By Phone. The DSA, who oversee the tests, can be contacted on 0870 010 1372. Additionally, Welsh speakers may call 0870 010 0372, and Irish speakers 0845 600 6700 to speak to an operator in their own language. Payment can be made via a credit or debit card.
- By Post. In order to book a test by post, candidates will require a TT26 form, which can be obtained from DSA test centres or post offices. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from the DSA website, or you can have one sent by phoning the booking numbers listed above. Many driving instructors will also carry forms for you to use. - Online. This is the most convenient method of booking a test, as it can be booked 24 hours a day. The online system can also show availability for a selected time span, allowing much more flexibility. To book online, you will require a credit or a debit card. The online booking facility can be found at http://www.dsa.gov.uk
If you are rebooking a test after failing, you will need to wait at least 1 working day between failing and re-booking, to allow the computer systems to update.
The current fee for a driving theory test is £21.50. Extra charges apply for those taking advanced tests, or for those taking test for other vehicles.
